Counts product field manual
A budget that stays useful after setup day.
Counts is a shared, zero-based envelope budgeting app. It connects current cash, daily spending, upcoming bills, future goals, and verified account balances in one household plan—without requiring an online-banking password.
Start freeUse Counts to decide what available money is for, record what happens, verify the plan against real accounts, and adjust together. Free includes the complete core loop for one or two people; Plus removes planning limits and adds deeper history, reports, imports, household capacity, and customization.
Give the money you have one clear job at a time
Counts turns account balances into named spending decisions instead of one misleading total.
Create everyday, annual, goal, and debt envelopes, then assign only money that is actually available. The Available number shows what remains unassigned, while every envelope shows what is still safe for that purpose. When plans change, move money between envelopes without rewriting the month.
Quick Fills can fund common priorities in a few clicks, and custom envelope icons make a busy plan easier to scan. Overspending remains visible until you decide how to cover it, so the budget stays honest instead of quietly hiding the difference.
Keep one household plan without sharing one password
Couples and families can work from the same numbers using separate, secure accounts.
Invite another person into the household so both of you can see current envelopes, accounts, scheduled activity, and reports. Access belongs to the household membership—not to a password passed between people—and private records are restricted by household-level database rules.
The shared ledger makes changes visible without turning budgeting into surveillance. Notes explain unusual choices, personal-spending envelopes preserve everyday autonomy, and a short weekly review can focus on the next decision rather than reconstructing what happened from screenshots.
Capture spending quickly, then keep the useful detail
Record expenses, income, transfers, envelope moves, and debt payments in one consistent ledger.
Transactions support splits, payees, tags, notes, dates, account status, and envelope allocations. That detail makes search and reports useful later, but the everyday entry flow keeps the required choices small. Transfers remain transfers instead of pretending to be spending.
Recurring bills and income can be scheduled daily, weekly, biweekly, monthly, or yearly. Upcoming activity appears before it posts, which gives the household time to fund the right envelope instead of discovering the obligation after the balance changes.
Import a statement without handing over your bank login
Use files on your schedule, review them first, and reconcile the result to a real balance.
Counts supports a file-first workflow for households that prefer manual budgeting or use a bank without a reliable connection. Map the fields in a CSV statement, review signs and dates, check possible duplicates, and choose what should enter the household ledger.
The reconciliation workspace compares the Counts balance with a verified bank balance at a specific date. It keeps unmatched statement activity beside likely ledger matches, lets you add what is missing, and records a clean checkpoint once the difference reaches zero.
Plan the next payday and the expenses that do not happen monthly
A calm budget needs both a short horizon and a place for predictable future costs.
Paycheck planning lines up available cash, upcoming income, and obligations by date. It helps answer what must be funded before the next deposit and shows whether the projected balance becomes uncomfortable before the end of the month.
Sinking-fund envelopes turn insurance, gifts, maintenance, school costs, and travel into small recurring contributions. Goals can carry targets and dates, while debt accounts keep minimum payments and extra payoff visible without mixing them into ordinary spending.
Use reports to change the next decision—not grade the last month
See income, spending, envelopes, payees, allocations, debt progress, and trends in context.
Counts keeps the working plan close to the history behind it. Core reports answer where money went and how envelope balances changed. Deeper views reveal payee patterns, allocation trends, debt movement, and the difference between a one-time surprise and a repeating pressure point.
Search, filters, tags, and exports keep the underlying records accessible. The goal is not a dashboard full of decorative charts; it is a small number of views that help the household decide what to fund, reduce, or protect next.
Treat account security and data ownership as core budgeting features
Secure access, recovery, exports, and deletion should not be luxury add-ons.
Counts supports individual authentication, password reset, authenticator-app two-factor authentication, scoped household invitations, and self-service account deletion. Financial tables are protected by row-level rules so signed-in users receive records for households they are authorized to use.
The browser receives only the public application key; private service credentials stay on the server. Counts does not hold or move money, and the current manual-and-import workflow does not ask for an online-banking password. You can export transaction history when you need a copy outside the app.
